History of Thurrock
Thurrock Borough is a large and diverse region with twenty electoral wards located along the north bank of the Thames just over 30 minutes’ drive away from central London, under its local authority of Thurrock Council.
At one time, Thurrock consisted of several parishes with their own churches and communities grouped together under ‘Hundreds’ for administrative purposes. It’s likely that its name stemmed from the Saxon term for boat’s bottom (or perhaps it refers to something even dirtier!).
Size and diversity will allow it to maintain economic expansion. This growth will be fuelled by new housing and business expansion primarily in Purfleet, Lakeside/West Thurrock and Grays urban areas; Tilbury docklands redevelopment supporting port activities will further boost this economic expansion; additionally new schools, community facilities and improved transport links will contribute towards this process – supported by Core Strategic Spatial Policies of Thurrock Council.
Flooding in Thurrock
THURROCK has experienced flooding from river and tidal floods in the past. While current flood defences reduce this risk, properties not in river/coastal flood plains could still be vulnerable to flash flooding during heavy rain if water levels exceed capacity.
Even after extensive efforts at flood prevention have been undertaken by the Borough, floods still present a risk. Mardyke Valley was particularly hard hit this year and homes in Stanford-le-Hope were also inundated due to an excess of rainfall that overwhelmed water course systems and sluice gates. According to the Environment Agency this was caused by overly granular precipitation falling directly onto soil surface from above ground water tables and into ground reservoirs.
One family who’s flat was flooded in Chadwell St Mary is calling upon Thurrock Council for help to find alternative accommodation. Toni Byers was relocated to a hotel but is in desperate need of somewhere permanent to reside. YT spoke with Toni about what happened and how she has coped.
